From: rscotttoo@hotmail.com ("scotty") To: aapjevents@yahoogroups.com Subject: [aapjevents] meeting notes 11/17 Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 18:48:24 -0700 Meeting began approx. 3:45 with five members in attendance. Richard Scott facilitated. We discussed the Charlie King Concert the details of which are almost completed. The Concert will be held at McClintock High Auditorium on Saturday, January 18th. Please save the date. Larry West with Tempe Parks and Recreation is on the Tempe MLK Committee and has succeeded in getting the City of Tempe Human Relations Office to co-sponsor Charlie King as part of the Tempe MLK Birthday Celebrations. Charlie will do a Civil Rights Songs workshop at 3 - 4:30 on the same day. The concert will be promoted by the City and all promotions will include reference to AAPJ as a co-sponsor. Larry, Jeannie and Victor are checking on the Black Student Union at McClintock High to see if they want to sell tickets? Several smaller details are being worked out and AAPJ should know by Sunday if any problems remain. NEEDS: 1) you to sell tickets 2) people to get businesses to sell tickets 3) someone to create a flyer 4) Press release 5) people to create a diversity brochure, using MLK quotes, to promote AAPJ for distribution during all MLK events 6) people to sign up in advance to work the evening of the event. We continued the meeting by talking about the A mountain sign and Monday's vigil - no one present had participated in either activity. So we moved on to talk about creating a "Peace On Earth" action/protest/rally/vigil on Sunday, December 22nd. (People have questioned this date - please let me know if this date doesn't work for you). The intent of the action was to use the holiday to talk about Peace and also, to focus on children. The action would gather at 3 PM at Tempe Beach Park with a procession South on Mill, then East on the South side of University, then across the foot bridge, back to College and North to the parking lot at Forest and 5th Street, where we would regather to light candles and go up A mountain. A team would be just under the A with a large banner saying either "? WAR" or "WAR" with a red slash through it. The sign would be done in both black paint and "glow in the dark" paint. The focus of this event is to remind people of the cost of war on children and signage should be done to reflect the focus of the event. Celebration of AAPJ anniversary was on the OC agenda and it is suggested that following this vigil we regather (?where?) and to then take time to celebrate an amazing year of working together for Peace. NEEDS: 1) the large glow-in-the-dark sign, 2) other signs 3) people to speak to the issue of children and war 4) outreach to other groups 5) press release 6) flyer. This event and Charlie King has yet to be approved by GA and is on the agenda for the next GA meeting.
